No Second Sock Syndrome

A little Cinderella sock story...

Usually, as soon as the first sock is complete, the second is begun.  However, once it was cast off,  this toe-up sock fit a bit too tight for my taste, so I tossed it back in the knitting basket while I considered if I should rip it back to the foot and make it longer.  Since I hate to rip, it has been there quite a while.

One of my sons loves to wear slipper socks I've made him (I can tell he loves them, because they're either on his feet or in the wash all the time, and I've already darned them - time to make new ones), and his girlfriend asked if I could make her a pair of socks.  Well, I had my lecture / class coming up, and this month my vendor booth at the Block Party Quilt Show coming up, with much to be done to prepare, so I wondered how to get everything done and also knit a pair of socks.  I realized she has TINY feet compared to mine, and remembered the single sock waiting in the basket, so had her try it on.  She liked it and it fit!  So the second sock was cast on and finished, and now she has a new pair of socks!

Knitting is much more fun than ripping, and sometimes, you just need to search for the right foot!!!

Roller Coaster Socks Finished!!

These have been in progress for ages, but since they were one of my purse projects (only really worked on when waiting, or passenger on trips), they took longer than they would have otherwise. The details were in an earlier post, so you can find them in the links on the right.

Not much progress on these

The last time I showed you these socks, I was at this point:

and now I am at this point:

Yes, I know I haven't made much progress, although I have worked on it.

After the first picture was taken, I knit more, but kept having trouble, in that I would forget the make1s, and end up either ripping, or fudging, just to move forward. Finally, while I was in Sisters, OR in July, I realized that the original error was in one of the first few rows, and decided to rip it all out! Once I started over, it has gone more smoothly, and I'm making progress, although having much less time to knit, however, I only have a couple rows to finish up the heel flap, and then I think it will move faster, with only pattern on the instep.

Back to Basics Socks - progress

The past two days have seen too many hours on the road. The good news is that I managed to finish the first sock.

Not only that, but I've also made considerable progress on the second sock, which is already up to the point of starting the arch increases!
Now just in case you have been wondering about the pattern and yarn, the pattern is Back to Basics, from Knitty, and the yarn is Lorna's Hand-Dyed Yarns, Shepard Sock, in color #504 Lakeview.

Back to Basics socks

This pair of socks is going very slowly, and as you can see, I'm still on my first sock (this is my purse project for riding in the car or waiting, so you can tell that I haven't been doing much of either). At least I was able to finish the instep increases, turn the heel, and am now going up the heel flap (back of foot). Once that is done, the rest is just p1, k2 ribbing until it's long enough, or am close to running out of yarn. Since I prefer my socks to be reasonably short, it shouldn't take too much more knitting time (of course, one must sit and knit for it to make progress).

Mermaid Forest Socks - finished!!!

Since we haven't been spending as much time on the road lately, these have taken quite a while for me to finish, but tonight I was able to finish the toe of the second sock and now have a pair! They are called Mermaid Forest Socks from SuzisKnits, and I love the way they came out (although I did decide not to continue the lace pattern down into the foot). The yarn is Jumbo Gems superwash fingering yarn by louet, that has been hand painted in the Key West Waters colorway by Cherry Tree Hill. I really love the way they turned out, and can't wait to wear them.

Burgundy-Teal socks finished

Yeah, another UFO finished! The second sock was fighting for attention while I was knitting the lacy pair, and I kept switching which one was going along with me. During yesterday's road trip I was able to knit up to the toe (had to stop, until I could try it on for size), and I just had to finish it before I went to bed. Now it's done and I can get some rest.

Just in case any of you would like to make a pair of your own, I used Berroco Sox yarn in color #1474, and the edinburgh pattern from the Berroco feet first booklet #275.

Sockotta Mock Cable Socks - Finished!!!

The past three weeks have been super busy (yes, it's an understatement), as we've had two families of houseguests, which overlapped for a week. Adding the nine of them to the five of us, means there were 14 people living in the house, but it also meant that we could all visit with one another, and we still had time alone with each of the visiting families.

Of course, we still have two houses being renovated (thankfully, a builder and his crew are doing the work), as well as our baby orchard to check up on, and all are doing well, despite being mostly neglected by us for the past three weeks.

Sometimes, I'd have time to knit while everyone was relaxing and chatting, and then yesterday's road trip gave me a large block of time to knit, so now they are complete and ready to wear!

Ryan's socks

Lately, with all the traveling we've been doing to check on the house renovation, etc., I've had lots of time to knit in the car. (I've tried to work on quilting, but got tired of being pricked and had to find something else to do.) Anyways, I decided to try some of the cool socks in Cat Bordhi's book "New Pathways for Sock Knitters". Since the socks use techniques that were new to me, I did the little baby sock lessons and found that making socks from the toe up were much more fun than from the leg down. No grafting, no picking up stitches! This pair uses a combination of techniques in the book, but is close to one that is pictured in the book. They were supposed to fit me (same gauge as the other pair I made), but ended up growing larger, so my son ended up getting these and I had to make another pair for myself.
